History of School
The Godfrey Stewart High School opened its doors to students in 1962 after being re-established from Savanna-la-Mar Secondary to Godfrey Stewart by a principal of the same name: Mr. Godfrey Stewart. Guided by the motto “Only the Best is Good Enough” Godfrey Stewart is an institution bordered by Savanna-La-Mar Primary and Infant school as all three institutions share the same play field and are linked in sequence as students moving from the infant school to and primary, can continue their education up until fifth form (5th) having met required criteria to do so. The institution is on a mission to becoming the best institution for student learning in the parish of Westmoreland and by extension, country of Jamaica. Currently, the dedication, passion and zeal for greatness are pronounced in its principal Theobold Fearon who succeeded former principal Mr. Daily in 2009. On the verge for greatness he stands guard in pursuit of earning the post of most favourable student training institution bounded and directed by God.
On entering Savanna-La-mar, the school is strategically placed on a one-way traffic road at Four Lewis (4) Street juxtaposed to the Savanna-La-Mar Public Hospital in Westmoreland. On establishment the school accommodated a capacity of 1600 but presently, now is getting to celebrate its 52nd anniversary, the institution is hosting for the year 2014 (709) boys and (714) girls which is a total of (1423) students but subjected to change as the year progresses. However, the teacher-student ratio is 1:25. On travelling around Lewis Street the schools rear exterior is seen as beautifully and elegantly painted in a shocking Burgundy and beige colours which is also the uniform colours for students. The property carries an aura that is conducive to social gatherings and personal rendezvous but facilitates education as key. Males from 7th to 4th grades are clad in Khaki Pants and a beige Shirt with a burgundy tie which includes the schools crest while females from 7th to 9th grades are clad in a full burgundy uniform with beige sleeves and collar.
For males in the 5th form, the beige shirt is replaced with white and for females while in 4th form their full uniform is changed as their full suit is split into skirt and blouse. The blouse now becomes beige while the burgundy skirt remains but when in 5th form the beige is replaced with white. As it relates to the ties for students, the colour and built of is dependent on student grade and rank: on the student council. If it be that a student is on the council, the tie being worn is still burgundy but with white stripes and the word “Prefect” engraved. It is mandatory that all students are placed in one (1) of five (5) sports houses to compete in an annual recreational sports day separate from clubs and fraternities. But while they prepare for the sports, it is made a part of their uniform that they include a strip of colour representing the particular house that they support. Ultimately, these strips of colours have been used as a means of distinguishing students in the lower school in the forms 7th into 9th. A certain amount of strips designate which grade the students are in while identifying house supported all year round.
Garbage disposal bins are placed on the rails of every 2 classes and in front of the dining room for the easy access and disposal of garbage by students as to alleviate littering. These bins add to attractiveness of the school as they match in perfectly with the colour of the campus and speak to cleanliness of staff and student. Overlooking the front of the campus is a lush lawn that is well kempt and unsoiled by student’s feet. Cleanliness is a virtue of a good man and as such the school and environs is kept clean and dandy at all times.
The institution facilitates evening institute, day School and private tutoring schools all tenable at the Godfrey Stewart High School Campus. All of the services provide, for the students and community, CSES/CXC/JSC/ Free morning and evening extra classes and Heart Trust NCTVET examination certification and training. In all technical and practical areas, the school facilitates recourses to conduct activities such as Wood Workshops, Auto Mechanic Shops, Electrical Installation Shops, Building Technology Shops, Technical Drawing Room, Home Ecology Centres (Food and Nutrition and Clothing), Information Technology and EDPM E-Learning Computer Labs, Science and Chemistry Labs, Literacy Centre, Language Centre (English and Spanish), Reading Centre, Sports Centre (Football Field, Cricket Pitch, Track and Field grounds, Basketball, Netball and Volleyball Court, Guidance Counselling Centres, Mathematics and other subject focussed rooms and in addition, Breakfast Programs for all students, and the convenience of a School Library and Resource Centre. For students, bathrooms are strategically positioned for students on both blocks A&B and one for teachers. Personal offices have attached to them, a restroom.
Also, clubs and fraternities inculcate moral values and often times training and exposure to valuable information and experiences to students and the wider community. There are programs that involve the community into the planning and implementing of strategies to mutually benefit the school, students, community and by extension the country and education system in whole. The school host annual career day events where institutions, companies, agenices, financial institutions and many motivational speakers for the guidance of students.
Apart from breakfast programs for the needy of students, a canteen and tuck shops are located in the dining area for the convenience of students both on the PATH program and those who wish to purchase to have access to a well cooked hot and delicious meal. In congruence with the tuck shops and canteens are small enclosed picnic areas created under selected staircases in the form of stalls and sellers/entrepreneurs at the rear of the school and two at the front where students out of proximity to dining room can still access food/snacks. For medical emergencies however, a school nurse is stationed on campus for the daily treating of students or referring to the hospital of doctors when cases arise that require advanced quarantining of students and staff. Moreover, for security purposes, a school police and gate guards are stationed on campus as a mitigation measure in the case of emergencies or to prevent unwanted eruptions.
As said before, the environment is conducive to social gatherings as not only are students courteous, polite and respectful; they are also friendly and free spirited. On entering the campus in the mornings before devotions be sure to be met at the gate by student ushers/greeters whose bright smile and charming personality makes your day. As the day progresses one can realize that students will be cooperatively inside classrooms silently and productively absorbing and regurgitating the lessons whether there be a teacher or not. Also, students walk on the left in perfectly constructed lines moving to and fro classes. At lunch, the same occurs as students stand in lines unmonitored and completely self initiated. The social environment is unpredictable to a stranger because it is completely abnormal and seemingly strange how dignified and modest both students and staff alike operate.
Conclusively, the burgundy and beige Godfrey Stewart High school has been the home for many students in and around Savanna-La-Mar, Westmoreland and neighboring parishes for the past half century having been established in 1993 on the property of 4 Lewis Street. Principal, Mr. Theobold Fearon and his staff are on a mission towards supremacy in the high school educational division. The institution facilitates evening institute, day School and private tutoring schools all tenable at the Godfrey Stewart High School Campus during the school week and on weekends.
